regulatory intervention

The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (“SIC”) has issued orders to the company managing a major professional social network and its parent company domiciled in Ireland, with the aim of strengthening its security measures in Colombia. This action has been taken due to the alleged exposure of information from around 500 million platform users, caused by a security breach related to “web scraping.”

The SIC highlighted the constant risk that “web scraping” poses to the proper treatment of personal information, especially on a platform with over 12 million active users in Colombia. The platform has a period of 4 months to comply with these orders and must provide certification from a specialized information security entity, whether national or foreign, that is independent and impartial.
