The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published its Innovation report for the year 2024, in which special emphasis is given to the development that Colombia has had in terms of Intellectual Property protection.

Among the most important points, it recognizes that the country has made enormous progress in promoting its economic diversification in areas of technology, increasing its areas of scientific specialization from 7% to 21%.

Despite this positive trend, there is still a long way to go. In this regard, the report recognizes that in less diversified economies such as Colombia’s, technological capabilities are not fully present in the international sphere, and their patents do not achieve their potential effectively.

This is especially important in the pharmaceutical and ICT fields, where Colombia stands out for its scientific research, but in practice, the actual potential for technological transformation is only 18%.
