The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has recently unveiled the Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2023, a comprehensive assessment that tracks innovation trends across more than 130 economies using 80 diverse metrics. This year’s report takes a deep dive into the impact of country-specific policy responses to the pandemic, shedding light on the consequences of a sluggish economic recovery from COVID-19, elevated interest rates, and geopolitical conflicts.

Surprisingly, some Sub-Saharan countries and Southeast Asian nations have achieved remarkable GII results, challenging conventional expectations based on their development levels. China continues to dazzle, standing out as the sole average-income economy to secure a spot within the prestigious top 30 of the ranking.

Despite indications of decreased investment in risk capital, these outstanding outcomes underscore the enduring significance of innovation in the global economy. The report’s metrics serve as valuable tools for local governments, offering insights to inform the development of public policies that stimulate innovation across various sectors.

The current global innovation landscape is in flux, shaped by the dynamics of pandemic recovery and geopolitical disruptions. These changes are not limited to leading innovation economies but are also unfolding in diverse regions around the world.
