COLOMBIA | Patents | Colombia: 5 out of 10 patent applications are granted, and 9 out of 10 industrial designs are registered

.

The statement was made by the Colombian Patent Office, which additionally indicated that in the last five years (from 2011 to September 2016) the granting of patents increased an 345% compared to the number of patents granted between 2006 to 2010 (five years in which 1958 patents were granted versus 6763 from 2011 to 2016).

The granting of utility models and industrial designs in the last five years also increased more than double, going from 290 to 619 and 1391 to 2785 respectively.

BRAZIL, COLOMBIA | Industrial Designs | Brazil and Colombia joins Designview industrial designs database

In the months of October and November 2016, the Industrial Property Offices of Brazil and Colombia joined to the industrial design database Designview.

Designview allows a unified search of more than 10 million of industrial designs in an unique presentation format, independently of which office the data is coming from.

Some of the Designview members worldwide are the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Union Intellectual Property Office, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, among others.  In Latin America, the Mexican IP Office is also part of Designview.

BRAZIL, FRANCE | Industrial Property, Anti Counterfeiting | IP Offices of Brazil and France signs cooperation agreement

On 22 November 2016, the Industrial Property Offices of Brazil and France signed an agreement in IP matters.  The agreement is focused in the exchange of information and experience between the Offices, especially in the field of search and examination of patents and trademarks.

The agreement will also focus on combating piracy and in the protection of intellectual property rights between the two countries, including cooperation between their governments in financial and tax matters.

 

COLOMBIA | Antitrust | Colombian Antitrust Authority creates an Elite Group against collisions and Corporate Cartels in Government tenders

The decision was adopted due to a investigation against two engineering companies, which allegedly incurred in cartelization or collusion in a government tender (and that may face fines of more than USD 25 million).

In that case, the Antitrust Authority states that there is evidence demonstrating that the companies jointly structured and developed the bids submitted in the tender, one of which was selected.

The Antitrust Group will operate in a coordinated manner with the Attorney General’s Office.

COLOMBIA | Anti Counterfeiting, Regulatory | Colombian Regulatory Authority and Police seized more than 15.000 units of fraudulent dietary supplements and medications

On 5 December 2016, the Colombian Regulatory Authority (INVIMA) and the Colombian National Police seized more than 15.000 fraudulent dietary supplements and medications.

The products were seized in an operative made in Bogotá, lacked of marketing authorization and had already been reported as dangerous in warnings issued by the INVIMA.
