WIPO recently announced the launching of its new AI-powered technology for identifying trademark image similarities.
The tool, based on machine learning algorithms, works as a search engine that identifies the combination of concepts within a trademark image (e.g. “an apple, an eagle, a tree, a crown, a car, a star”), to find similar trademarks to the one under review.
The new development represents a major breakthrough for trademark searching tools, as earlier generation technologies were merely able to identify image similarity based on the shape and color of the signs involved. Hence, WIPO’s new tool aims to provide narrower and more precise search results, reducing expenses linked to the protection of such distinctive sings.
