Spotify files antitrust complaint against Apple

27 March, 2019

On 13 March 2019, the Founder and CEO of Spotify announced that his company filed an antitrust complaint against Apple before the European Commission.

The spokesman of the music streaming platform, accused Apple of requiring Spotify to pay an unfair and discriminatory tax when it comes to purchases made through the App Store. Moreover, he declared that Apple is charging Spotify with a particular tax which is not imposed nor required to apps like Uber, Deliveroo and the Apple Music app itself.

In response, Apple stated that Spotify is aiming to take nothing but all the benefits of a free app without being free. The company pointed out that Spotify’s claims merely reflect a purpose for retaining 100 percent of the revenue, without real perks for the authors of the content exploited through the streaming platform.
