On February 22nd, the deployment of 5G technology was enabled in the national territory. This was done through operators such as Wom, Movistar, Tigo, Claro and Telecall, which are the companies that received the licenses for the installation of the new network.

Although Colombians already had the possibility of using this technology available in other countries, the emergence of a local 5G network brings with it multiple benefits such as a connection speed up to 10 times faster than the current one for users, improvements in the automation processes of companies, and will boost smart cities benefiting the national government. To make use of this, it will only be necessary to be in an area with coverage and have a device compatible with the technology.

The extension of 5G technology is expected to involve an investment of approximately 2.8 billion pesos per year over the next ten years, and by 2030, 55% of the population should already be connected.

It is worth noting that in the auction carried out by the MinTic, the agreement reached by the operators avoided any monopolies in the country, as each of the participants obtained a block of spectrum of this technology, and it is already advantageous as it will increase connectivity in educational institutions, roads, and others.
