The telecom sector has approximately 80 million users and, in recent years, market players have been subject to multiple sanctions by Colombia’s Competition Oversight (SIC).

Given the sector is highly regulated, María del Socorro Pimienta, Superintendent of Industry and Commerce, met on March 23 with senior executives of the country’s mobile telephone companies to emphasize the need to comply with the free competition regime, protection of telecom users and their personal data.

The meeting is a wake-up call for these companies, given it shows that the SIC will exercise an important surveillance on their activity in the market, which would imply expecting higher standards of conduct in order to comply with applicable regulations and mitigate legal contingencies.
