Digital platforms will need to license the news they share

Seeking to mitigate the impact on the media industry, the Canadian parliament recently passed a law requiring technology companies, social networks, and search engines to get licenses for sharing local news content.

Therefore, companies such as Meta have decided to restrict news content shared on social networks such as Facebook and Instagram in Canada.

There are several precedents worldwide in this direction; for example, in 2021 Australia adopted a Law forcing Google and Facebook to pay for news content published on their platforms.

This law responds to the concern that social media platforms and search engines benefit financially by displaying excerpts or links to third-party news without adequately compensating the original content generators.
