european commission fines apple

On March 4, 2024, the European Commission sanctioned Apple with a fine of more than €1.8 billion due to its abuse of its dominant position in the music streaming app market for iOS users. For more than a decade, Apple prevented app developers from being able to:

i. Inform iOS users about subscription prices for music streaming services that are not on the App Store.

ii. Include links in their apps that direct users to websites where they can purchase alternative subscriptions to music streaming platforms.

iii. Contacting users obtained through the App Store, such as by email, to inform them of alternative pricing options.

Although the sanction was applied in the European Union, this could have implications for Colombia, fostering a fairer environment for developers by allowing them to compete on a level playing field and offer more options to consumers.
