CHILE, CANADA | Patents | Patent Offices of Chile and Canada implement a Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH)

.

On 6 January 2017, the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) between the National Institute of Industrial Property of Chile (INAPI in Spanish) and the Canadian Office of Industrial Property (CIPO) entered into force.

This program will present advantages to applicants such as, speeding the granting and reducing costs of patents by avoiding parallel procedures between two offices.

MEXICO | Copyright | Amendment to the Mexican Copyright Law could reinforce precautionary measures against infringers of protected content

The Mexican Senate is close to approve a Bill, which -once in force- would extend precautionary measures against copyright infringers, allowing the seizure of hardware and supplies used to disseminate / broadcast protected content.

Additionally, the Bill would establish other measures, such as the seizure of revenues derived from the illicit exploitation of protected content, and the seizure of commercial establishments..

UNITED KINGDOM, EUROPE | Patents | Green light for the European Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court, more commitment of the UK on its ratification

On 16 January 2017, the Preparatory Committee of the Unified Patent Court reported that the European Unitary Patent system will enter into force in December 2017, expecting that the provisional application phase will begin in the spring of 2017.  The above, it considering that during this year, they expect to obtain the missing ratifications for its implementation.

For its part, the United Kingdom (through the new Minister of the Portfolio of Intellectual Property Affairs, Jo Johnson) has reaffirmed its support for this system, confirming that it will ratify the Single European Patent Agreement and will evaluate its implementation within the UK trade.

MEXICO | Patents | Mexican Patent Office invites to review its Gazette on Free-Use Patents

.

The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI in Spanish) invites to review its monthly Gazette on “Patent Applications of Free Use and Inventions of Public Domain”, whereby applications for new creations (such as patents or industrial designs) are published.

The Gazette includes (i) applications on new creations that contain free-use technological information on its descriptive memory, and (ii) PCT applications not granted at its national phase in Mexico.
