North America: New agreement between Mexico, United States and Canada

On 30 November 2018, the Canada – United States – Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) was signed, which replaces the NAFTA agreement. The next step is congress approval in each country.

The agreement brings the following changes i) in automotive matters, it modifies the rules of origin of the industry; ii) in pharmaceuticals, access barriers to generics and biosimilars would be increased; and iii) regarding labor rights, the treaty contemplates an appendix in which the three countries commit themselves to adopt and comply with labor standards and practices as established by the International Labor Organization; among others.
